Tourism Resources
"Below are recommended websites with valuable information about Puerto Rico. These resources can assist you in planning your visit and enhancing your overall travel experience."
Puerto Rico Ferry
Puerto Rico’s ferry system offers convenient and scenic transportation options connecting the main island with nearby destinations.
One of the most popular routes is the short 12-minute ferry between Old San Juan and Cataño, providing quick access to attractions like Casa BACARDÍ.
From the town of Ceiba on the east coast, travelers can take ferries to the islands of Vieques and Culebra—renowned for their natural beauty, beaches, and bioluminescent bays.
The ferry to Vieques takes about 30 minutes, while the ride to Culebra is around 45 minutes. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the official Puerto Rico Ferry website or the City Experiences app, which also offers real-time updates and schedules. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at least one hour before departure, especially on weekends and holidays.
El Yunque
National Forest
El Yunque National Forest, located about 45 minutes from San Juan, is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System and one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic natural treasures. It’s a lush, vibrant paradise filled with dense jungle trails, cascading waterfalls, misty mountaintops, and the sounds of native coquí frogs.
To visit, it’s highly recommended to start early, ideally by 9:00 AM, to avoid crowds and afternoon rain showers. The forest is open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, but certain areas may close earlier. Keep in mind that you’ll need a timed entry reservation, which can be booked in advance on Recreation.gov.
Taxi or Uber to El Yunque, it's NOT ideal. Return rides are hard to get due to poor cell service, and Uber isn’t allowed to pick up inside the forest. Taxis are also pricey. Renting a car or booking a guided tour is a much better and more reliable option. Arriving early helps secure parking.
Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring water, snacks, bug spray, and a light rain jacket. If you're planning to cool off in the river or under a waterfall, pack a swimsuit and towel as well.
Vieques & Culebra
Vieques and Culebra are two breathtaking islands off Puerto Rico’s eastern coast, known for pristine beaches, clear waters, and a peaceful atmosphere—perfect for a day trip or overnight escape. Vieques is famous for Mosquito Bay, the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay, and wild horses roaming the beaches, while Culebra boasts Flamenco Beach, consistently ranked among the world’s best.
Both islands are reachable by small plane or ferry. The fastest and easiest option is to take a short flight (25–30 minutes) from San Juan via airlines like Cape Air, Vieques Air Link, or Air Flamenco. Alternatively, you can drive or shuttle to the Ceiba Ferry Terminal (about 1.5 hours from San Juan) and catch a ferry to either island; this is a budget-friendly option, but ferries often sell out, so book early at Puerto Rico Ferry Website.
For the most convenience, especially if you prefer not to plan the logistics yourself, consider booking a full-day guided tour from San Juan. These tours typically include transportation, ferry or flight tickets, guides, and beach time, often with gear and lunch included. Whether you choose to fly, ferry, or take a tour, be sure to leave early in the day.
